18A) Sausage Party

Picture
Columbia Pictures.
18A for
Running Time: 88 Minutes.
1 star out of 4.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's raunchy and completely outrageous foray into the animation field is a complete and utter disaster. Not only is Sausage Party an unfunny and in cohesive piece of filmmaking, but the film fails to live up to the promise of the trailers, where audiences will find out where food really goes. This film is not as crazy, raunchy, or subversive as the film thinks that it is. Yes, there are some sequences, particularly the ending, that justifies the films R Rating, but the rest of the film is a dull, muddled, confusing, and uninspiring mess. While the top notch voice cast all do solid work, particularly Kristen Wiig as Brenda the Hot Dog bun, the rest of the cast all feel as if they are doing a paycheque gig, as no one truly immerses themselves in the role. I never forgot that I was hearing the voices of actors like Edward Norton, Salma Hayek, and Michael Cera, and this was very distracting. Most importantly, the biggest problem with Rogen's Sausage Party, is that the story as told in the film, does not justify a full length running time, this is a great idea that would have made a great animated short, but the film does not work as a cohesive whole with a 90 minute running time. All in all, I admire what Rogen and Goldberg attempted to do with Sausage Party, but the film is too uneven, unfunny, confusing, and dull for me to recommend it to anyone.
