18A) The Hateful Eight
The Weinstein Company.
18A for Brutal Violence, Gory Scenes, Coarse Language
Running Time: 167 Minutes.
3 stars out of 4.
Quentin Tarantino's follow-up to 2012's Django Unchained is nothing short of great. Like Django, The Hateful Eight is another Tarantino Western filled with a great ensemble of actors. Jennifer Jason Leigh is a standout for me, and I believe that she will be Oscar nominated for her great performance as Daisy Domergue. The Hateful Eight runs 167 Minutes, and I will tell you that the first hour is almost unwatchable. Tarantino spends too long setting everything up, and not getting to the point. Having seen the entire film, I can understand why he would make this choice on a narrative perspective, but from a structural standpoint, this prevents the Hateful Eight from reaching 4 star level. The second and third acts are incredible, and simply put, is Tarantino at his best. The dialogue crackles, the violence is not gratuitous, and the performances all work. I just wish that the beginning of the film was as strong and as impactful as the second half of the film. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed The Hateful Eight and ranks among the best films I have seen this year (2015). I encourage you to see this film, and engulf in it's greatness. The Hateful Eight is one of the best films of the year, and deserves to be seen by audiences everywhere. Quentin Tarantino's somewhat inspriring screenplay and vibrant direction make this one of the most fun, violent and suspenseful films of the year.
