14A) The Heat20th Century Fox.
14A Running Time: 123 Minutes 3 and a half stars out of 4. Since 2011's Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy has established herself as a household name for constantly delivering very funny, and memorable performances in many films such as Identity Thief, This is 40, Life as We Know It, The Hangover Part III, and much more. The heat reunites her with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, and Sandra Bullock is also along for the ride, in what I think is by far the funniest film of the last few years. The Heat takes place in Boston, where we meet FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn(Sandra Bullock) a hard working and single who is asked to go to Boston and investigate and possible shut down a major drug dealing operation. In Boston she meets foulmouthed Detective Shannon Mullins(Melissa McCarthy), whom she is partnered with on the case. The Heat is a fun, raunchy, outrageous, extremely entertaining, never dull, thrill ride. Going into The Heat, I was skeptical because I had seen the trailer and did not think it looked very funny. It looked cheesy, and boring. But, I was so surprised at how much I laughed from start to finish (mostly because of Melissa McCarthy). The Heat has an interesting premise, and mixes action and comedy very well. The chemistry between Bullock and McCarthy is great, and the two actors bounce off each other very well. The one liners that Melissa McCarthy delivers are very memorable and will have you laughing for a very long time. When I saw This is 40 a film that I thought was overlong, boring, and unfunny, the only thing I liked about the film was Melissa McCarthy's five minute outburst in the principals office. That scene in This is 40, was the only part I laughed at. The Heat is literally a film with just hilarious Melissa McCarthy tirades, that are original, not overlong, and very, very funny. The acting in the film is great. Sandra Bullock does a respectful and believable job as special agent Sarah Ashburn, and she has great chemistry with Melissa McCarthy's Shannon Mullins. The two are the perfect right brain, left brain combination and bring great comic relief to a somewhat serious plot. The Heat is a funny, original, and different type of comedy that you will ever see. The script and direction are superb, but its the performances form Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock that carry the film, and take the dialogue and elevate it.
