14A) The Place Beyond the Pines
Running Time: 140 Minutes.
4 stars out of 4.
Director Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines is an ambitious, emotional, very well acted, and masterfully written and directed masterpiece. Oscar nominees Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling give very good and believable performances as the two leads of the film. Eva Mendes, Dane DeHaan, and Ray Liotta lead a stellar supporting cast and give career best performances. The Place Beyond The Pines is set in a small town in New York, and is about Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling) a famous motorcycle stuntman, and when he visits his former girlfriend he finds out he has a baby son with her. Luke feels the need to be apart of his sons life, and he does everything possible and and illegal provide for his son. The Place Beyond The Pines is one of the years best films.
In a summer movie season filled with sequels, remakes, and reboots it is great that we finally have an original film like The Place Beyond The Pines. This is a film that is realistic, emotional, funny(at times), complex, and different. This film is very unpredictable and is unlike any other film. This is because of the risks that director and screenwriter Derek Cianfrance took with his screenplay and direction to surprise the audience. The acting by the ensemble is incredible, and the famous actors and actresses give very believable performances and create characters that you care about.
The Place Beyond The Pines is a film I cannot talk about in depth because I do not want to spoil anything for fellow audience members. With a running time of 140 minutes you might feel as if that is too long for a film with such a simple premise, but that is untrue because one of the surprises of this film is that is is alot more complex than you think.
Even though there are some scenes that take too long being setup, the payoff is great and I was able to forgive the long setup scenes because of the very satisfying payoff.
Without spoiling anything I will say that the final scene of this film is incredible, and brings together everything that is setup in the films entirety.
